Just like Windows Vista, Windows 7 can be used legally for up to 120 days without activating with a valid 25-character alphanumeric product key. Windows typically comes with a 30-day time limit for users to activate their copy of the operating system, but there’s a command that is often used by corporate administrators to reset the 30-day countdown. The rearm command can be used up to three times without violating the Windows 7 EULA. Thus, if the user resets the countdown on the last day each time, he or she can gain up to 90 extra days to use Windows 7 legally and for free. The Windows Secrets newsletter outlined the step-by-step instructions for extending the grace period:

Step 1: Click Start, All Programs, Accessories. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run As Administrator. Enter your administrator password.

Step 2: Type the following command and press Enter: slmgr -rearm (note the space after slmgr and the hyphen in front of rearm.)

Step 3: Restart Windows 7.

Most users won’t have to bother with these three steps since the majority, about 95 percent, get new versions of Windows with a new computer. For the five percent or so who purchase Windows 7 at retail, 30 days is likely enough to punch in the product key. Pirates will of course have their own methods to get around activation, and here’s confirmation that they have plenty of time to do so. No, this is certainly aimed at administrators who need to delay activation for whatever reason, and even though 120 days seems a little over the top, we’re sure many of them are relieved to know the number of days hasn’t been reduced in Vista’s successor.

HTC has upped its predicted portion of Android phones from 30 to 50 per cent of all devices in 2010.

Following the success of its first three efforts, the G1, Magic and Hero, the Taiwanese phone maker will likely focus less on Windows Mobile and more on the mobile Google OS.

The report by Digitimes also states that HTC is bringing out another high profile handset (shocking) in September or October of this year based on Qualcomm’s BREW Mobile Platform.

Go-between

This platform acts as a go-between for applications and the hardware, making it easier for developers to code for the phone without having to worry about the interface. This in turn helps lower the cost of the handset too.

The new device will also use the new HTC Sense UI and TouchFLO 3D interface, as the company looks to build on the imminent success of the Hero.

It’s unknown whether this new device will be Android- or Windows Mobile-powered, as September or October will be the point when WinMo 6.5 is likely to be released.

From the beginning of Facebook, people have used their real names to share and connect with the people they know. This authenticity helps to create a trusted environment because you know the identity of the people and things on Facebook. The one place, though, where your identity wasn’t reflected was in the Web address for your profile or the Facebook Pages you administer. The URL was just a randomly assigned number like “id=592952074.” That has now changed.

The new Facebook URL is like your personal destination, or home, on the Web. People can enter a Facebook username as a search term on Facebook or a popular search engine like Google, for example, which will make it much easier for people to find friends with common names. Your username will have the same privacy setting as your profile name in Search, and you can always edit your search privacy settings here.

Usernames are on a first-come, first-serve basis for your profile and the Facebook Pages that you administer by visiting www.facebook.com/username/. You’ll also see a notice on your home page with instructions for obtaining your username at that time.

Facebook usernames will be available in basic text forms, and you can only choose a single username for your profile and for each of the Pages that you administer. Your username must be at least five characters in length and only include alphanumeric characters (A-Z, 0-9), or a period or full stop (“.”). While usernames are currently available only for Romanized text, non-Romanized characters may be supported in the future.

Think carefully about the username you choose. Once it’s been selected, you won’t be able to change or transfer it. If you signed up for a Facebook Page after May 31 or a user profile after today at 3 p.m. EDT, you may not be able to sign up for a username immediately because of steps we’ve taken to prevent abuse or “squatting” on names.

T-Mobile has officially begun rolling out the Android 1.5 update to its customers in the UK.

The company said on Friday that it had begun distributing the update to its G1 handsets in the UK, and that US G1 owners can expect the update to begin arriving in one week.

News of the impending update first arrived last week, when the company told UK users to expect Cupcake during May after the final build of the software was pushed live.

The eagerly anticipated Cupcake update adds a number of features to the G1 handset, most notably the ability to utilize the device’s touch-screen keyboard capabilities and new components which allow users to shoot video on the handset and upload directly to YouTube.

News of the Cupcake update’s arrival comes as the software’s other name, ‘Android’ has grabbed headlines. Earlier this week Google was listed as one of 46 companies being sued by a US business owner who claims to own the rights to the Android name.
