Android 1.5 software ‘Cupcake’ update goes live

T-Mobile has officially begun rolling out the Android 1.5 update to its customers in the UK.

The company said on Friday that it had begun distributing the update to its G1 handsets in the UK, and that US G1 owners can expect the update to begin arriving in one week.

News of the impending update first arrived last week, when the company told UK users to expect Cupcake during May after the final build of the software was pushed live.

The eagerly anticipated Cupcake update adds a number of features to the G1 handset, most notably the ability to utilize the device’s touch-screen keyboard capabilities and new components which allow users to shoot video on the handset and upload directly to YouTube.

News of the Cupcake update’s arrival comes as the software’s other name, ‘Android’ has grabbed headlines. Earlier this week Google was listed as one of 46 companies being sued by a US business owner who claims to own the rights to the Android name.

I’m not happy.

I waited so long for the Google paid apps to appear, they finally appear ….. and guess what I can’t even purchase anything!

It would appear that Google don’t seem to fully support those of us who use the Google Apps For Your Domain …… any ideas anyone?

Paid apps are finally here in the UK

Well, it’s 1.36am and I thought I’d have a routine check of the Market for any new Android apps. I almost fell off my chair ….. the paid apps are finally here for the UK Android G1 fans who are on the RC9 firmware.

Now, I have more time to spend looking through all the apps that I have missed before!

Google Maps Latitude Enabler for Root Users

Enable Google Latitude and Launch Maps on ROOTED G1′s ONLY in countries that it is disabled, e.g. UK.

Needs Superuser whitelist and latest firmware. If you’ve run Google Maps since last reboot, it will also need a reboot to stop the Maps app and refresh.

Got root? – JFv1.43 for UK RC9 firmware!

Well, after all the thoughts and ponders around if I should go root, I decided that I would!

After following the real easy guide found here : http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Quick_Root I was able to obtain root, then upgrade to the custom RC9 ROM within minutes.

Now that the JF Rom updater has been released into the Market, keeping up to date with custom rom’s has never been easier.

Finally got the RC9 update for Android

Well, I woke up this morning and finally got the question asked to me.

“System update available, update now or later”

Obviously I pressed “update now” quicker than I can type it!

After about 5 – 6 minutes, the phone updated, then re-booted.

However, I am deeply disappointed with the update. I honestly thought there would be a significant change, or at least some new features.

The things I have noticed so far are

1) Local Settings (English / German)

2) Check for System Updates option.

3) Market now tells me if there is an update available, well I still think aTrackDog is better!

4) Well, that’s it!

I’m hoping that I may ‘notice’ things as I go along …. but until then, bring on the cupcake so we can see some significant changes / updates to our Android phones!

Free Voicemail on T-Mobile (UK)

T-Mobile cheekily changed there Terms & Conditions a while ago so that your voicemail was no longer free but you have to now pay 12p a minute for it!

There is a way of getting around this, and at the least have the voicemail come out of your included minutes. This only applies obviously for those on contract phones.

Rather than using the phone’s voicemail option, just dial your own mobile number. This will put you through to your voicemail and will be taken from your inclusive minutes.

If you have the G1 or any other phone where you can edit the voicemail number (usually in call settings or similar) just remove the existing number and enter your mobile number in full!

Enjoy free voicemail again!

WiFi Lock for Android

Well, a new trend of apps have just hit the market.

Apps that help keep your wifi connection alive.You may have noticed that if you are connected to a WiFi connection, this will usually disconnect when the phone goes to ‘sleep’ this can be annoying especially if on reconnection he IP changes, or you are on a restricted data plan!

I’ve tried three of the free apps listed in the Market place.

WiFi Lock

Wifi Insomnia

Keep Wifi

Wifi Insomnia just had bad reviews, so I didn’t even bother with that! I installed both Wifi Lock and Keep Wifi. I’ve decided to keep ‘WiFi Lock’ as it’s a smaller app and just more simple. I strongly believe that with convenient apps like this you don’t need a fancy and heavy UI or any other options, just a simple on / off will suffice.

I’ve been using it now for about 3 hours, so far it’s kept me connected to my WiFi connection alive. Well done and thanks go to the developer Michael Elsdorfer.

T-Mobile Android G1 SD Card problem?

Is it just me, or is this a common problem?

Whenever I transfer files to the G1 via the PC the files do not actually show up on he phone untill after I have rebooted the phone?

This seems to me like the phone doesn’t actually read the files on the fly but instead wants to be rebooted before it can actually see the files / folders.

Anyone else experience this problem?
