Finally got the RC9 update for Android

Posted By: News on Mar 03, 2009 in Mobile Phones

Well, I woke up this morning and finally got the question asked to me.

“System update available, update now or later”

Obviously I pressed “update now” quicker than I can type it!

After about 5 – 6 minutes, the phone updated, then re-booted.

However, I am deeply disappointed with the update. I honestly thought there would be a significant change, or at least some new features.

The things I have noticed so far are

1) Local Settings (English / German)

2) Check for System Updates option.

3) Market now tells me if there is an update available, well I still think aTrackDog is better!

4) Well, that’s it!

I’m hoping that I may ‘notice’ things as I go along …. but until then, bring on the cupcake so we can see some significant changes / updates to our Android phones!

    I got the RC9 this morning (Edinburgh/On Charge/GPRS).

It is VERY disappointing. Looks like they have disabled latitude for the UK users (unlike Germany who recently got the RC9 update with latitude). However, if you go to the Google Latitude install page, via your G1 you are able to “Launch” which opens Google Maps (v3.0). I am thinking that maybe we HAVE the correct version of Google Maps with Latitude and it has simply been disabled.

Another thing I have noticed in the ability to mark comments as spam in the market. Also to delete from trash in POP3.

Paid apps is not available for Europe users at this time it seems. Some people are commenting (hopping) that these 2 features will be enabled once the update has been rolled out fully.

      Hi Ewan,

Good post, and explanation about the Latitude. I tried it myself and see what you mean. Hopefully they will acivate this soon.

However, as for the marking of comments as spam, this is available now.

If you goto the Market …. then Hold down your finger over a persons comment it will give you the option to “Mark as spam”

      Try it!

My flatmate received ‘Google Latitude’ on his BlackBerry Storm last week. I would have expected Google to look after its own users first or at least at the same time.

      Yes, we’d like to think.

But don’t forget, the Google Voice Search came out on the iPhone a long time before it was thought about for those with the G1 :(

Maybe Google has a suprise for us all and they are not telling us!

There’s for wishful thinking I guess.

Paid applications have been enabled in the market for me. Quite a few available now.
