Torque Developments is best known for its
work on Japanese, BMW and Jaguar performance vehicles although many of our components can
be used on other performance cars. We have converted many marques of vehicle which
includes the following: Alfa Romeo: Bespoke supercharged AlfaSud conversion, Bentley
Turbo 'R': 550bhp conversion, BMW: Many supercharger and turbo conversions, Mercedes: Bespoke supercharger and turbo conversions, Porsche 944 Turbo: Major
upgrade giving additional 120bhp, Jaguar: all types including creating a
480bhp XKR.
Although the majority of our upgrades are
based on improving the standard vehicle, we look foward to, and are happy to take on any
conversion 'out of the ordinary' which will generally mean designing and constructing
parts in-house from scratch. Many of our conversions have also been the first to be
carried out in the UK. These include a BMW 3.2 'M' Coupe which, with only 1,200 miles
under it's belt was brought to us for a full engine stripdown to be fitted with uprated
pistons and con-rods to accept the ball-bearing turbocharger conversion. The end result
was 450bhp with good power from 2,000 rpm. We were also the first to turbocharge the Honda
NSX some 6 years ago, still with it's enthusiastic owner (a regular trackday goer) and
even now still giving some 420bhp. There are many more, most of which have been in various
tuning magazines, copies of which can be found in our reception area.
We have never been interested in offering
the cheap and cheerful approach to either parts supply or labour quality. Long ago we
found that in our industry 'cheap' nearly always means 'severely compromised' so we leave
that to the many other tuners that are now abundant in the UK. What we have always been
interested in is sound engineering coupled with known quality parts. Unfortunately, like
most things in life, the best is generally a little dearer. Thats not to say we do not
strive to keep costs down. However, we try and find acceptable compromises between cost
and quality or horsepower output. For instance, is an extra 10bhp really worth £1,500??
To you it may be, it may not, but all the options will be given, and in a way that is not
'pushy'. You will be the one who decides, not us. None of our staff are on comission or
performance related pay.
In addition, we like what we do. Staff here
are enthusiastic and all have had a 'play' with their own cars. Both the Directors have
owned some 40 performance cars, including the 1st 'Big Single' and 1st 'Big Twin' turbo
Supras in Europe, both giving an estimated 600bhp+ output. Admittedly, many of the cars
purchased by TDI have been for R&D purposes (such as the Bentley Turbo 'R') but all
have been driven with the heart.
All of our performance parts can be fitted
at our fully equipped workshop close to London. We always recommend that our customers opt
for this as you will know engineers that are used to the specialized nature of our
business have carried out the conversion. We are able to cater for anything from Stage one
upgrades such as an exhaust replacement, up to Stage nine, which could be a complete
engine replacement/rebuild. Many one-off conversions have also been carried out where the
necessary request has not been done before. This can often apply to
turbocharger/supercharger upgrades that we design in-house.
Unlike some other tuning companies, we
rarely use outside contractors as we have found that the quality of workmanship can
suffer. For this reason we have had to invest heavily in machinery such as lathes, pillar
drills and mills etc. so that we can monitor each stage of the conversion and virtually
eliminate any problems that may jeopardize the final conversion.
We are constantly spending time on research
and development to ensure that our finished upgrades are as well engineered as possible.
It is our expertise and involvement with all aspects of vehicle modification that has,
over the years, allowed us to accumulate the knowledge that our customers will benefit
from.
TDI are also not interested in trying to
confuse customers with technical jargon in an attempt to impress. We cut to the chase, and
strive to maintain an approachable front. If you wish to get technical, then we can
certainly do that, but if you simply want to know what power you can achieve for a certain
budget then thats as far as we will go. We are small enough to care, but knowledgeable
enough to keep those of you who want to know all the ins and outs happy.
The company was founded in 1985, having
the following goals in mind:
To supply only the best quality
goods and services available, with emphasis on quality rather than price.
To concentrate on lower volume
specialist vehicles, where the customer is typically more enthusiastic about their vehicle
and hence more demanding.
To specialise in supplying goods and
services that would otherwise be difficult to find.
To have a full range of Research and
Development facilities in-house so we can be confident that the products we sell do
actually perform as expected.
To employ only top grade technicians
(generally university graduates) to ensure that the quality of the work and the products
that we sell are as good as possible.
To supply ongoing support and advice
for our customers, with technical backup.
To install the highest quality
R&D, diagnostic, tuning and test equipment currently available within the
industry.
